Casa Adobe De San Rafael

One of the most popular museums in Los Angeles County, the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe Historic Site and Museum is a fascinating place to learn about Montebello’s rich history. The museum houses a variety of artefacts from the 1800s, as well as rooms furnished to match that time period. Visitors can also take a tour of the property, and there are community events held here throughout the year.

Tomas Avila Sanchez, the first Sheriff of Los Angeles, and Maria Sepulveda (step daughter of Rafael Verdugo de Sepulveda) built this hacienda-style home in 1865. Located about a half-mile from the original Verdugo Adobe, which is now the Hoover High School, the adobe was large for its time and suited Tomas and Maria’s needs perfectly.

Inside the adobe, you’ll see original rooms that are filled with artifacts that once belonged to the Sanchez family. These include the guest parlour, family parlour and bedroom.

The house was restored by the City of Glendale in 1932 and is now a registered California Landmark. The furniture found in the adobe is either purchased or donated and reflects the lifestyle of Tomas and Maria in the late 1800s.

During your visit to the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe Historic Park and Museum, you can learn about the life of Tomas and Maria and their family through the exhibits on display. These include photos from the 1800s, as well as information about the Sanchez family and the city of Montebello.

You can also tour the house to see its original rooms. These include the salita, which was the family living room in winter months. The salita has a fireplace and a collection of high-back chairs and round tables.

Other important areas in the adobe include the kitchen and living room, which feature beautiful period furniture that has been either purchased or donated. This includes the carpet-covered chair in the bedroom, the cradle rocker in the salita and cane bottom chairs.

The adobe is surrounded by landscaping and trees that add to the charm of the area. The grounds are also home to a picnic pavilion that can be used for small family or company events, as well as a turf area for larger festivals-type activities.

This is the perfect place to enjoy a day of fun and adventure. Children love meeting and petting the friendly farm animals at the Montebello Barnyard Zoo, which features a merry-go-round, train rides, and pony rides.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more modern, head to Angry Horse Brewing in Montebello, where you can sample a range of artisan beers. The brews at this brewery are inspired by traditional methods, but the flavours are unique and exciting.

You can also take a trip to the Alex Theatre in nearby Glendale, which offers a variety of first-rate live entertainment throughout the year. This beautiful venue hosts plays, dance performances, concerts and comedy acts.
